Computer Vision

Computer vision enables machines to interpret images and video for tasks such as detection, recognition, and measurement.

Definition

Computer vision enables machines to interpret images and video for tasks such as detection, recognition, and measurement.

Plain English explanation

Teaching computers to understand what is in pictures and video.

Technical explanation

Modern CV stacks often use convolutional networks or Vision Transformers for classification, detection, and segmentation, sometimes combined with multimodal language models.

Why it matters

Vision capabilities underpin medical imaging, retail, manufacturing inspection, and autonomy—sectors Brel tracks with specialized tags.

Real-world applications

  • Quality inspection
  • Medical image analysis (regulated)
  • Document and scene understanding

Benefits

  • Scales visual review
  • Enables continuous monitoring

Limitations

  • Domain shift across cameras and lighting
  • Labeling costs
  • Regulatory constraints in healthcare and biometrics

Common misconceptions

  • Demo accuracy may not transfer to factory or clinic conditions
